Beach weddings in the north of England?

For many brides a beach wedding is a dream come true. It’s one of the reasons one in four British couples get married abroad.

A month ago it became a possibility to feel the sand between your toes as you tie the knot ~ without ever having to endure a long-haul flight or crumpled wedding gown.

Bournemouth Council launched a wedding beach hut where the UK’s first legal, civil wedding ceremonies will take place from April 2012. It got me thinking whether coastal councils in Yorkshire would follow the south’s lead.

The answer? Not any time soon. I made enquiries with tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire and Scarborough Council in North Yorkshire who said they were working together to investigate the possibility but Scarborough aren’t applying for a license at the moment.

I think it would be a boon ~ Scarborough is undergoing a multi-million pound regeneration programme {including an overhaul of the impressive Victorian Spa complex, pictured below} and is the country’s third most popular tourist destination. Pioneering beach weddings in the north could only bring more people to the town.

But all hope is not lost for wannabe beach brides in the north! North East Lincolnshire Council is considering applying for a license for weddings on the beach at Cleethorpes.

Council officials in the North Sea resort told the Yorkshire Post they would be consulting their counterparts in Bournemouth about their experience, before deciding whether to apply themselves.

But people in Cleethorpes already have ideas about giving couples a high.

Melanie Wood, director at Pleasure Island theme park in Cleethorpes, said: “They can get married on the beach, say their vows and then take a ride on a double loop rollercoaster afterwards.”

In Bournemouth, couples will be able to say their vows in the beach hut {pictured below} while up to 400 guests watch from a marquee.

Bellissimo Wedding Planners have signed a contract with Bournemouth Council to organise the waterfront weddings. Packages for the 2012 season start at £999 which includes use of the licensed wedding hut, a representative from Bellissimo Wedding Planners to help plan your day, white wooden seating, cliff lift arrival for the bridal party, music for your ceremony arrival and drinks reception, plus contemporary seaside decor.  Couples can add in a marquee and catering and all the other touches as they wish.

What do you think? Would you like to be able to marry on your local beach?
